The Federal Government has officially commenced the distribution of free Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders to households in Bayelsa State as part of its nationwide drive to expand access to clean cooking energy and encourage the use of gas across Nigeria.
The initiative was flagged off in Yenagoa under the Decade of Gas National Grassroots LPG Penetration Programme, a key government intervention aimed at increasing the adoption of LPG, reducing dependence on firewood and kerosene, and promoting a cleaner, healthier environment.
The development was announced in a post shared on Friday via the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA)’s official X account.
Speaking during the launch, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), described the programme as a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s commitment to making clean and affordable cooking fuel accessible to more Nigerians.
According to the minister, the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s broader energy transition agenda by promoting the use of cleaner fuels, improving public health, protecting the environment, and enhancing the quality of life for households across the country.
The grassroots LPG penetration programme is expected to be implemented in phases across various states as part of efforts to deepen domestic gas utilisation and advance the objectives of Nigeria’s Decade of Gas initiative.
