The Cross River State Government has approved the first phase of a state-wide Smart Surveillance Infrastructure Project designed to improve public safety, strengthen smart governance and enhance climate resilience across the state.
The approval was granted during a meeting of the State Executive Council after the Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Cross River State Planning Commission, Dr. Bong Duke, presented a memorandum outlining the initiative.
According to Dr. Duke, the project forms part of the Cross River State Resilience Agenda 2026–2030 and is aimed at deploying modern technology to support security, emergency response, urban planning and environmental sustainability in line with global smart-city standards.
He explained that the state’s existing analogue surveillance system has become outdated, covering less than 10 per cent of Calabar metropolis while leaving other key urban centres such as Akamkpa, Ugep, Ikom, Ogoja and Obudu without any surveillance infrastructure.
The new project is expected to introduce advanced digital surveillance technology that will improve crime prevention, strengthen intelligence gathering, support disaster management and provide real-time monitoring of public spaces. It is also expected to enhance government decision-making through data-driven planning and improve the state’s capacity to respond to climate-related challenges.
The state government said the initiative reflects its commitment to building safer communities, modernising public infrastructure and creating a more secure and resilient Cross River for residents and investors alike.
Phase One of the project is expected to focus on establishing critical surveillance infrastructure in strategic locations before its expansion to other parts of the state.
