The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed the release of a group of Nigerian girls who were detained at the airport in Mauritius, bringing relief after days of growing public concern over their situation.
The commission disclosed on Monday that the girls had regained their freedom and were travelling back to Nairobi, Kenya, where they had departed from before arriving in Mauritius.
The incident gained widespread attention after a viral video showing the young women in detention circulated on social media, prompting Nigerians to call on the Federal Government and relevant authorities to intervene.
An Instagram user, @queenbethia, who shared the video on Sunday, alleged that the girls had been held at the Mauritius airport since July 31, 2026.
In the post, she wrote: “Please tag every relevant authority because this is nonsense! This cannot keep happening. Mauritius is notorious for this.”
Reacting to the development, NiDCOM, through a statement issued by its Digital Media Unit on Monday, confirmed that the girls had been released following efforts by relevant authorities.
The commission also stated that it was working to ensure the circumstances surrounding the detention were thoroughly addressed while reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Nigerians abroad.
Although the exact reasons for the detention have not yet been officially disclosed, NiDCOM assured the public that it would continue engaging with the appropriate authorities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The release of the girls has been welcomed by many Nigerians, who had expressed concerns over their safety after the video of their detention went viral online.
