The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Ogun State Government and relevant security agencies, demanding swift action over the recent wave of attacks targeting students in the state.
The student body called for the immediate rescue of five students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, who were reportedly abducted, as well as the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the killing of a student of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori.
NANS also urged the authorities to implement stronger security measures around tertiary institutions, expressing concern over what it described as the growing insecurity threatening students’ lives and academic activities across Ogun State.
The association warned that it would begin sustained peaceful protests across the state if its demands were not met within the 72-hour deadline.
In addition, NANS appealed to the Ogun State Government to send a high-powered delegation to sympathise with the family of Ahmed Sekinat, the student of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic who lost her life during a robbery attack.
The student body further requested that government officials visit another student who sustained gunshot injuries during the same incident and is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta.
NANS stressed that students deserve to study in a safe and secure environment, urging the government and security agencies to take decisive steps to restore confidence in the safety of campuses across the state.
