IHRPS Warns Niger Delta Oil Companies to Respect Host Communities’ Rights

Written by calabarGist

The Special Envoy to West Africa of the International Human Rights Protection Service (IHRPS), Ambassador Charles Omini, has warned oil companies operating in the Niger Delta against taking the rights of host communities for granted.

Omini, speaking with journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, said oil companies must recognise their responsibility to develop host communities and properly understand the communities where their operations are located.

He stressed that the IHRPS would ensure that the rights and privileges of host communities are defended at all levels.

Omini said the organisation was prepared to engage relevant stakeholders to ensure that communities affected by oil exploration and other activities receive the benefits and development they are entitled to.

During a subsequent visit to some oil companies in Eleme, he also urged residents to protect oil facilities in their communities, describing them as critical assets to the Nigerian economy.

He called for greater cooperation between oil companies, host communities and relevant authorities to promote sustainable development, protect national assets and uphold the rights of people across the Niger Delta.
