NAFDAC Reveals What Happened to Fake Products Worth Over N1.5tn

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it has destroyed or seized regulated products worth more than N1.5tn as part of its ongoing efforts to rid the country of fake, substandard and unwholesome products.

The agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed this on Monday in Lagos while addressing concerns over the growing circulation of counterfeit and substandard regulated products in the country.

According to Adeyeye, NAFDAC has intensified its enforcement operations across the country, targeting products that pose risks to public health.

She said the agency carried out a major coordinated destruction exercise across Lagos and the South-East between February and March 2025, involving regulated products valued at more than N1.5tn.

The development comes amid renewed public concern over the availability of fake medicines, adulterated food products, cosmetics and other regulated items in Nigerian markets.

NAFDAC is responsible for regulating and controlling the manufacture, importation, exportation, distribution, advertisement, sale and use of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals and other regulated products in Nigeria.

The agency has continued to strengthen its surveillance and enforcement activities, including inspections, investigations, seizures and destruction of products found to violate regulatory requirements. Its 2024–2027 strategic plan also places emphasis on combating substandard and falsified medical products and other regulated goods.

NAFDAC has urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and avoid purchasing regulated products from questionable sources, while encouraging consumers to verify products before use.

The agency’s official product database, the NAFDAC Greenbook, provides a platform for checking registered products and their approval status.
