Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has spoken out against viral social media memes portraying him as a dictator, saying the comparisons reflect a lack of political and human awareness.
The France captain addressed the trend in an interview with France Football, acknowledging that some of the memes were created and shared as jokes. However, he said he was uncomfortable with being compared with historical dictators whose actions caused widespread death and suffering.
Mbappé has been depicted in several AI-generated images wearing military-style outfits, sitting on a throne and appearing alongside controversial historical leaders. The memes are largely intended to exaggerate perceptions of his strong personality and influence on the pitch and within football teams.
The 27-year-old said he could understand why some people found the memes humorous, but stressed that there was a more troubling side to the comparisons.
He pointed out that historical dictators were responsible for killing people and causing misery to millions, saying he did not believe he had ever done anything comparable.
Mbappé also distinguished the wider social media trend from jokes made by his France teammate Ousmane Dembélé. Dembélé has jokingly referred to him as “Mobut”, a nickname linked to former Zaire leader Mobutu Sese Seko, but Mbappé said he regarded his teammate’s version simply as harmless fun.
The “dictator Mbappé” meme has circulated online for several years but gained wider attention around the 2026 World Cup, with AI-generated edits and other satirical images spreading across social media.
Despite the controversy surrounding the memes, Mbappé remains focused on his football career at Real Madrid and his ambitions with France.
