More than 120 traditional birth attendants in Edo South Senatorial District have received training on safer childbirth practices as part of efforts to reduce risks to mothers and newborns.
The second phase of the training, facilitated by Senator Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South, was concluded on Friday in Benin City, Edo State.
The programme was organised in collaboration with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), with emphasis on early pregnancy care, identification of danger signs and the prompt referral of women with complications to appropriate healthcare facilities.
Participants were trained to recognise warning signs during pregnancy and childbirth and understand when cases require urgent medical attention beyond the capacity of traditional birth attendants.
The initiative is part of Imasuen’s broader healthcare interventions in Edo South, particularly efforts to improve maternal and infant health in communities where some women may face difficulties accessing formal healthcare facilities.
The senator had previously said his intervention was aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality by equipping traditional birth attendants with knowledge to provide basic prenatal and antenatal support while ensuring that complicated cases are referred to hospitals.
Health authorities have also stressed that complications such as severe bleeding, infections and pregnancy-related hypertension require prompt medical attention and referral to facilities with the appropriate capacity.
The training follows an earlier programme for traditional birth attendants in parts of Edo South, where participants were similarly advised to exercise caution during deliveries and refer complicated cases to hospitals without delay.
The latest phase is expected to strengthen the capacity of traditional birth attendants to support safer maternal and newborn care at the grassroots level.
