Cross River Police Arrest 41-Year-Old Man Over Alleged Arson in Calabar

The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 41-year-old man, identified as Bassey Ekpo, in connection with the alleged setting ablaze of a residence in the 8 Miles area of Calabar.

The incident was reported on September 12, 2026, at the Ikpa Omin Police Division by the occupant of the affected residence, Ekemini Stephen.

According to the Police, Stephen reported that he was in church when he received a phone call from a neighbour informing him that his residence had been set ablaze.

Suspect Allegedly Names Mother as Instigator

With the assistance of neighbours, the suspect was apprehended and taken to the police station.

During preliminary questioning, Ekpo allegedly told investigators that he was sent by his 61-year-old mother, who is currently at large and has been identified by the suspect as the alleged instigator.

The Police said the circumstances surrounding the alleged arson and the involvement of all persons connected to the incident are still being investigated.

Police Visit Scene, Begin Investigation

Following the report, Police operatives visited the scene of the incident and took photographs as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Command said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged fire and determine the level of involvement of everyone connected to the case.

The Cross River State Police Command assured members of the public that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
