The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Idris Aregbe, has mourned the death of veteran Nollywood actor, Olu Jacobs, describing him as a towering figure whose career helped shape Nigeria’s film and theatre industry.
Aregbe, in a statement issued on Wednesday following the announcement of Jacobs’ death by his family, described the late actor as the “Lion of Lufodo,” a reference to his commanding presence and long-standing influence in Nigeria’s performing arts.
Reflecting on the actor’s legacy, Aregbe said, “When the lion rests, the forest remembers his roar.”
He said Jacobs was more than an actor, noting that he defined roles, set professional standards, built institutions and inspired generations of performers.
“Some actors play roles. Olu Jacobs defined them, and that is what has set him apart from others,” Aregbe stated.
According to him, Jacobs’ career spanned the stages of London and Nigeria’s growing film industry, where he represented the country with dignity and distinction.
Aregbe added that many young actors who aspire to make an impact in the entertainment industry are following a path partly paved by Jacobs’ contributions.
“Every young actor who dares to dream big walks a road he paved,” he said.
The Lagos government aide said the actor’s death would be felt beyond the entertainment industry, adding, “Lagos mourns. The culture mourns. Africa mourns.”
Describing Jacobs as a great man whose influence would continue beyond his lifetime, Aregbe said, “Great men do not die. They simply become the ground on which others stand.”
He also extended his condolences to Jacobs’ wife and fellow veteran actress, Joke Silva, whom he described as “our mother and aunty,” praying that God would grant her and the entire Jacobs family strength and comfort.
