A tanker loaded with 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) has overturned on Ijako Road, inward Oke Oso, along the Ajah Expressway in Epe, Lagos State.
The incident involved a Mack tanker carrying the petroleum product and occurred while the vehicle was reportedly climbing Ijako Hill.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said preliminary findings indicated that the tanker’s propeller detached from its joint, causing the vehicle to lose momentum before overturning.
One of the tanker’s compartments was also found to be leaking, prompting emergency responders to immediately begin containment measures to prevent a possible fire outbreak and environmental damage.
According to LASEMA, no death or injury was recorded in the incident.
The agency said it received a distress alert at about 11:32am and deployed its Whales Team from the Epe Base, with responders arriving at the scene about four minutes later.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service had already commenced containment efforts before the arrival of the LASEMA team.
Other agencies involved in the response included the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps and representatives of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers.
LASEMA said traffic was managed around the scene to protect motorists and prevent secondary incidents.
An empty tanker was also mobilised to safely transfer the petrol from the overturned vehicle before recovery operations could begin.
The agency advised motorists to cooperate with traffic officials and avoid the affected area while emergency operations continued.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, commended the emergency responders for their swift intervention and coordinated response.
The agency said further updates would be provided as recovery operations progressed.
