Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his remarkable 23-year career with the Portuguese national team.
The 41-year-old forward made the announcement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, through a video message shared on his social media platforms.
Ronaldo disclosed that he would hand over Portugal’s iconic number 7 shirt after the November international break, describing the decision as emotional and difficult.
“Today, the time has come to pass it on to the future. It was not an easy decision,” the five-time Ballon d’Or winner said.
The Al-Nassr forward leaves international football as the men’s all-time leading international goalscorer, with 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal.
His international career began in August 2003, when he made his senior debut at the age of 18.
During his time with Portugal, Ronaldo played a major role in securing the country’s first major international trophy at Euro 2016. He also helped the national team win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
His retirement marks the end of one of the most remarkable international careers in football history, having represented Portugal across six World Cup tournaments.
Ronaldo expressed gratitude to his family, teammates, coaches, staff and Portuguese supporters who stood by him throughout his journey.
His departure closes a historic chapter for Portugal, with the football world now reflecting on the legacy of one of the greatest players to ever represent the national team.
