The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has urged Nigerians to be more careful when purchasing goods, warning consumers to check product certification marks to avoid buying substandard and counterfeit items.
The organisation advised consumers to look out for its official certification marks on products and verify their authenticity before making payments.
SON explained that checking certification details can help buyers identify products that have undergone the required conformity assessment and meet applicable Nigerian standards.
It also encouraged Nigerians to pay attention to product labels, manufacturing information, expiry dates where applicable, and other relevant details before purchasing goods.
The warning is aimed at protecting consumers from unsafe and inferior products that could pose risks to their health, safety and finances.
SON further urged members of the public to report suspected fake or substandard products to the appropriate authorities for investigation and necessary action.
Consumers are advised not to rely solely on attractive packaging or low prices when determining the quality and authenticity of products.
The warning comes as SON intensifies efforts to tackle the circulation of fake and substandard goods in Nigerian markets.
The agency has also been transitioning to a more visible certification logo and strengthening its Product Authentication Mark system, which allows consumers to check the genuineness of certified products using their mobile phones.
What Nigerians should look out for:
1 MANCAP mark: For locally manufactured products.
2 SONCAP certification: For regulated imported products.
3 Product Authentication Mark (PAM): A security sticker with a QR code that can be scanned for verification.
