The African Democratic Congress has condemned an attack on its supporters in Kaduna State, warning that rising political violence could threaten Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the incident as an unacceptable escalation, particularly as political activities ahead of the elections are gradually gaining momentum.
Tension reportedly erupted in Kaduna on Wednesday when suspected thugs attacked ADC supporters participating in a solidarity walk for the party’s governorship candidate, Isa Ashiru, in the state capital.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Abdullahi said the party was concerned about the growing use of violence and intimidation in political activities.
He warned that allowing political thuggery to become normalised could undermine the credibility of the 2027 electoral process and discourage citizens from freely participating in political activities.
The ADC called for those responsible for the attack to be identified and brought to justice, stressing that political disagreements should be settled through democratic means rather than violence.
The party also urged security agencies to provide adequate protection for political parties and their supporters as campaigns and other political engagements increase ahead of the 2027 elections.
The latest incident has further renewed concerns about political violence as opposition parties intensify preparations for the next general elections. The ADC has previously raised concerns over attacks and disruptions involving its members and political activities in Kaduna.
The party maintained that political participation is a fundamental democratic right and urged all political actors to avoid actions capable of creating fear, tension or instability ahead of the polls.
