Players of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have received the naira equivalent of $100,000 each following their historic triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.

The National Sports Commission confirmed that the payments, which formed part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reward package for the team, were credited to the players’ accounts on September 9, 2026.

The commission also confirmed the payment of the naira equivalent of $50,000 to the head coach and each member of the team’s technical crew.

According to the NSC, all the players and officials have confirmed receipt of the funds, marking the completion of the financial aspect of the presidential reward promised after the team’s remarkable continental victory.

D’Tigress defeated Mali 78-64 in the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on August 3, 2025. The victory made Nigeria the first country to win the women’s AfroBasket five consecutive times and extended the team’s overall title tally to seven.

Following the historic achievement, President Tinubu announced a reward package that included $100,000 for each player, $50,000 for the head coach and technical crew members, national honours of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), and three-bedroom flats in Abuja.

The NSC said the players and officials had earlier received the title documents for their Abuja apartments and their OON certificates in February 2026 during the team’s participation in the FIBA World Cup qualifying tournament in Lyon, France.

With the latest payment, the commission said all elements of the presidential reward promised to D’Tigress have now been fulfilled.

The development comes after Nigeria’s women’s basketball team recently competed at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.
