As part of efforts to end child marriage and other harmful traditional practices, Bagori Care Foundation (BCAF) on July 20, 2026, organized a stakeholders’ training workshop in Bekwarra Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The workshop brought together community leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and youth representatives from selected wards across the local government to strengthen community-based efforts aimed at protecting adolescent girls and women.
The training focused on increasing awareness of child marriage, improving participants’ understanding of existing legal protections, and encouraging collective action to safeguard the rights of children.
Participants examined the root causes of child marriage and other harmful traditional practices while engaging in open discussions on their impact on human rights and community development. The workshop also highlighted key legal instruments, including the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act and the Child Rights Act, emphasizing the need for stronger enforcement and community compliance.
Facilitators further discussed the health, psychological, social, and economic consequences of child marriage, noting that the effects extend beyond victims to families and entire communities.
Special attention was given to the critical role of community stakeholders in preventing child marriage, protecting vulnerable adolescents, and strengthening referral and response systems for girls at risk.
The interactive sessions featured practical case studies, group discussions, and experience-sharing, giving participants the opportunity to ask questions and contribute solutions.
At the end of the workshop, participants gained a deeper understanding of the dangers of child marriage, practical strategies for prevention, and the legal responsibilities of communities in protecting the rights and future of every girl child.
