The Federal Government has disclosed that 65 out of the 69 ambassador-designates nominated by President Bola Tinubu have received approval from their respective host countries, representing about 97 per cent of the total diplomatic appointments.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made this known on Saturday, stating that the process of securing agrément—the formal approval a host country grants before accepting a foreign ambassador—is progressing in line with established international diplomatic procedures.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, dismissed reports suggesting delays in the accreditation process, insisting that the exercise has recorded significant progress.
According to the ministry, only a few countries are yet to complete the approval process, with just two host nations still expected to communicate their formal consent. The remaining cases are said to be at different stages of diplomatic processing.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform the public and the international community that 97 per cent of the ambassadors appointed by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, have successfully received the Agrément of their respective host countries,” the statement said.
The ministry explained that obtaining agrément is a standard diplomatic requirement under international practice and must be completed before ambassadors can officially assume duty in their assigned countries.
It further reassured Nigerians that the government remains committed to strengthening the country’s diplomatic engagements and ensuring that all ambassadorial postings are concluded in accordance with international protocols.
