The Nigerian Senate has vowed to ensure the conduct of a national population census in 2025, stressing its importance for effective planning and development.

The resolution was made during a budget defense session on Tuesday with the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Isa Kwarra.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Identity Management and Population, Senator Abdul Ningi, emphasized that lawmakers would remain resolute in their efforts to see the census conducted before the end of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“We will soon engage the President on this matter and formally write to him through the Senate President, highlighting the need for a census this year,” Ningi stated.

Senator Olalere Oyewunmi echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the need to pressure the President to prioritize the census in 2025.

Meanwhile, Senator Diket Plang criticized the country’s reliance on estimated population figures, which he argued undermines effective planning and development.

“It’s disheartening that we are still working with estimates in this modern age. How can we plan without knowing the exact population? It’s sad that 2024 passed without achieving 90 percent performance. We need to conduct a definitive count by 2025,” Plang said.

The senators agreed on the urgent need to address this national issue, with plans to meet President Tinubu to stress the significance of conducting a census and ensuring adequate funding and preparation.
