C’River Consumer Protection Cracks Down on Expired Products, Takes Sensitization Campaign to Grassroots

The Cross River State Consumer Protection Agency, on Friday led by it Director General Charles Ushie Ph.D, sustained its aggressive campaign against purveyors of substandard and expired products in the state, marking a significant highlight of its activities to commemorate the 2025 World Consumer Rights Day.

As part of the Agency’s concerted efforts to safeguard the rights of consumers in the state, its team of officials and enforcement agents embarked on a thorough market surveillance and sensitization exercise, targeting major suppliers and retail outlets in the state capital.

The operation before now resulted in the seizure and destruction of large quantities of expired and substandard products ranging from food items, liquor, cosmetics and other categories of consumables.

The Agency’s Director-General, Dr Charles Ushie, reiterated its commitment to protecting unsuspecting consumers from the dangers of substandard and expired products, emphasizing that the safety and well-being of consumers remain its top priority.

Addressing a cross section of newsmen at the Agency’s headquarters in Calabar, Dr. Ushie emphasized that “My message to the residents of Cross River State is clear: before consuming any product, ensure it is genuine and safe by checking the NAFDAC registration number for locally manufactured products, the ISO certification for imported products, the batch number, the date of manufacture and expiry date.

“By taking these simple steps, you can protect yourself and your loved ones from the dangers of counterfeit and expired products”, he disclosed.

“Let me especially express my sincere appreciation to His Excellency, Apostle Senator Bassey Otu, for his magnanimity and leadership in facilitating this event in Cross River State. His commitment to the well-being of our citizens and his dedication to initiatives like this is truly commendable, and we are grateful for the support given to us.”

The DG said what the Agency has done is join forces with the local traders to create a culture of consumer awareness and safety to prevent the unnecessary harm caused by expired goods and build a healthier, more responsible community.

According to the DG, the consequences of ingesting expired products or using substandard cosmetics can be devastating, extending from food poisoning to long-term health damage. From allergic reactions to life-threatening conditions, the risks associated with consuming bad products can be alarming.

The week-long World Consumer Rights Day activities will close with a grand finale on Saturday, March 15th, 2025, featuring a lecture symposium on pressing consumer rights issues. In addition, the Agency will honor deserving individuals that have made significant contributions to consumer protection and advocacy.
