The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Florence Obi has restated
her administration\’s commitment towards reviving the maintenance culture in
the institution.
Prof Florence Obi stated this when officials of the Nigerian Institute of
Architecture (NIA) paid a courtesy call to her at the Council Chambers of the
institution.
The Varsity administrator who said she is very passionate about the maintenance
of buildings and other critical infrastructure in the institution urged the NIA and staff of the institution to lead the drive to revive the maintenance culture in the institution to complement the developmental strides of her administration.
She said, \” maintenance of anything is very important and my administration is
very passionate to maintain all that the institution has”. \” I keep saying I am not in a hurry to start new buildings that needs maintenance
in Unical. “ My interest is to make sure abandoned projects are completed rather than starting new projects.\”
Prof Obi further stated that due to the disposition of her administration towards
the maintenance of critical infrastructure, the University library urgently requires
remodelling. She said with the intervention of TETFUND, the institution would sustain its maintenance culture adding that, \” We will keep working with TETFUND to get
maintenance funds to maintain our dilapidated structures\”
Prof Obi said starting a Programme in architecture is one of the best things that
has happened to the University, saying it is one of the highly rated programmes in
society
While acknowledging the pivotal role played by the Architecture Profession in
society, the Vice Chancellor appreciated the NIA for indicating its willingness to
assist and support the University.
This came as she wished them a successful Annual General Meeting(AGM) and promised to grace the occasion.
Earlier, the president of NIA, Arc. Enyi Ben Eboh.congratulated Prof Obi on her
emergence as the first female Vice Chancellor of the institution, stating, \”when
you empower women you empower the community\”.
Arc. Ben-Eboh said that the visit aims to intimate the Vice-Chancellor of the
Annual General meeting coming up in December and invite her to grace the
occasion as the special guest of Honor.
He also used the occasion to applaud the University for starting the architecture
programme even as he pledged that the NIA will support the University in areas
of need.
He appealed to the Vice Chancellor to look into the areas of training of staff and
maintenance of the property, adding that, \”without maintenance nothing last
regardless of how much it costs.\”
