In a press release signed by the State Chairman of NANNM Cross River State Council, Comr. Josephine Bassey FCAI, the association celebrated the dedication, sacrifices, resilience, and commitment of nurses toward improving healthcare delivery and saving lives across the state and Nigeria at large.
According to the association, the 2026 theme highlights the critical role nurses play in sustaining functional healthcare systems and ensuring quality patient care despite the numerous challenges facing the profession.
“Nurses remain the backbone of healthcare delivery, serving tirelessly in hospitals, communities, schools, rural health centres, and emergency settings,” the statement noted.
NANNM commended nurses across Cross River State for their professionalism, compassion, and selfless service to humanity, especially under difficult working conditions.
The association also appreciated the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, for his support toward healthcare development and nursing education in the state. Particular commendation was given for the provision of three 32-seater coaster buses to nursing training institutions, describing the intervention as a major boost to transportation, learning activities, and student welfare.
Additionally, NANNM applauded the state government for securing accreditation for nursing training institutions from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), noting that the achievement would strengthen nursing education and ensure the production of competent healthcare professionals.
Despite these achievements, the association raised concerns over several challenges affecting the nursing profession and healthcare delivery in the state.

Key Demands by NANNM Cross River State
Upward Review of Retirement Age
NANNM called for the immediate implementation of the approved retirement age review for nurses and other health professionals to 65 years or 40 years of pensionable service. The association explained that the policy is necessary to address the shortage of experienced healthcare personnel and improve mentorship within the health sector.
Massive Employment of Nurses
The association decried the shortage of nurses across health facilities in Cross River State, stating that the situation has increased workload pressure, stress, burnout, and reduced efficiency among healthcare workers.
NANNM therefore urged government at all levels to embark on the massive recruitment of nurses and midwives to improve healthcare delivery and reduce unemployment among qualified professionals.
Upgrade of Health Facilities
The association also called for the rehabilitation and upgrade of healthcare facilities across the state, especially primary healthcare centres in rural communities. According to the statement, quality healthcare cannot thrive in poorly equipped environments lacking modern equipment, adequate medical supplies, and conducive working conditions.
Call on Government
NANNM appealed to both the Cross River State Government and the Federal Government to continue investing in the nursing workforce through improved welfare packages, better remuneration, training opportunities, safe working conditions, and policies that encourage professional growth.
The association stressed that empowered nurses are essential for healthier communities and stronger healthcare systems.
Message to Nurses
While encouraging nurses to remain united, compassionate, and committed to professional ethics, NANNM acknowledged the sacrifices and immeasurable impact of nurses on society.
“As we celebrate International Nurses Week 2026, let us remember that investing in nurses is investing in the future of healthcare, and only empowered nurses can save lives,” the statement concluded.
The statement ended with solidarity messages in support of NANNM, Cross River State, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
