Nigeria has emerged as the country with the highest number of private jets in Africa, with nearly 240 aircraft currently in operation, according to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
Keyamo made the disclosure during a strategic meeting with Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier Inc. in Montreal, Canada, where both parties discussed plans to establish a world-class aircraft maintenance and service centre in Nigeria.
The minister said the proposed maintenance facility would help reduce the enormous amount of foreign exchange spent on servicing Nigerian-owned aircraft abroad. He added that the project would also create skilled employment opportunities, strengthen local aviation expertise and position Nigeria as a leading hub for business aviation services in Africa.
“Nigeria officially has the highest number of private jets in Africa, with nearly 240 currently operating within the country. A significant amount of foreign exchange is spent every week on maintaining these aircraft outside the country,” Keyamo said.
According to the minister, the initiative is part of the Federal Government’s ongoing aviation reform programme aimed at modernising the sector through strategic partnerships with global aircraft manufacturers, improving operational efficiency and expanding Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure.
