President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerian healthcare professionals living abroad to consider returning home and contribute their expertise to strengthening the country’s health sector.
The President made the appeal on Friday while receiving a delegation of the Nigerian Diaspora Medical Associations (NDMA), led by the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Speaking during the meeting, Tinubu urged the visiting delegation to encourage more Nigerian doctors, nurses and other medical professionals in the diaspora to return and support ongoing efforts to improve healthcare delivery across the country.
The President noted that Nigeria’s development requires the active participation of its skilled citizens, regardless of where they currently reside. He stressed that the knowledge, experience and global exposure gained by Nigerians abroad remain valuable assets that can help transform critical sectors, particularly healthcare.
Reflecting on his own experience, Tinubu recalled studying and working in the United States before deciding to return to Nigeria, saying his journey demonstrates that meaningful contributions to national development often begin by coming back home.
“There is nowhere like home,” the President said, urging members of the diaspora to see Nigeria as a place where they can make a lasting impact.
In response, the delegation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s healthcare system through medical outreach programmes, professional collaborations, training initiatives and knowledge exchange. The association also pledged to continue working with relevant government agencies to improve healthcare services and encourage greater diaspora participation in national development.
