UK Consultant Doctors Announce Two-Day Strike as Pay Dispute Deepens

Written by Mary Bassey

Consultant doctors in England are set to embark on a two-day strike in November following a fresh dispute with the government over pay, pensions and working conditions.

The British Medical Association (BMA), which represents the doctors, announced on Monday, October 26, that the industrial action would take place on November 25 and 26, 2026.

The union said the decision followed unsuccessful discussions with the government over concerns about doctors’ pay, workloads and the long-term sustainability of their roles within the National Health Service (NHS).

The BMA argues that consultant doctors’ pay has fallen by about 25 per cent in real terms over the past 17 years, despite a 3.5 per cent pay increase this year. It has also criticised the government’s proposed 2.4 per cent pay rise for the 2027/28 financial year, describing it as insufficient.

Beyond pay, the union is seeking changes to working hours, better recognition for out-of-hours duties and greater flexibility in pension arrangements.

During the planned strike, consultants are expected to maintain emergency services, with hospitals operating at a level similar to Christmas Day staffing. However, routine appointments, elective operations and follow-up consultations could be postponed or rescheduled.

The government has expressed disappointment over the strike announcement, maintaining that discussions with the union have been constructive and urging doctors to reconsider the action, particularly as the NHS prepares for the winter period.

The BMA has indicated that the strike could still be avoided if the government commits to meaningful formal negotiations on pay and working conditions.

The planned action comes amid continuing concerns about staffing pressures, waiting lists and the retention of experienced medical professionals across England’s health service.
