The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, has praised Team Nigeria for its impressive performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, describing the country’s medal haul as a remarkable achievement.
Speaking on Friday during a reception hosted by the British High Commission in Abuja, Montgomery congratulated the Nigerian contingent for flying the nation’s flag high and showcasing exceptional talent, resilience and determination throughout the competition.
Team Nigeria concluded the Games as Africa’s highest-ranked nation, finishing seventh on the overall medals table with a total of 24 medals. The team secured 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, delivering one of the country’s strongest performances in recent Commonwealth Games history.
Montgomery said Nigeria’s success reflected the dedication of its athletes, coaches and officials, adding that their achievements had inspired millions of Nigerians and strengthened the sporting ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
The reception brought together athletes, sports administrators, government officials and diplomatic representatives to celebrate Team Nigeria’s achievements and recognise the hard work that contributed to the country’s successful outing in Glasgow.
Nigeria’s performance reinforced its status as one of Africa’s leading sporting nations, with the medal haul highlighting the country’s growing strength across several sporting events at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
