The Federal Government has taken a fresh step toward improving telecommunications services and expanding digital access across Nigeria by signing a new partnership aimed at powering telecom infrastructure with renewable energy.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deploy renewable energy solutions for telecommunications infrastructure, reducing the industry’s dependence on diesel-powered generators.
The agreement was signed during the NCC–REA Stakeholder Forum held in Abuja and is expected to support the integration of telecom base stations with existing and future renewable energy mini-grids, particularly in rural and underserved communities where access to reliable electricity remains a challenge.
By connecting telecom sites to clean energy sources, the initiative is expected to lower operating costs for mobile network operators, improve network reliability, reduce carbon emissions, and accelerate broadband expansion across the country.
The collaboration also aligns with the Federal Government’s digital economy agenda, which seeks to bridge Nigeria’s digital divide by ensuring more communities have access to affordable and reliable telecommunications services.
Industry stakeholders believe the partnership will encourage greater investment in rural connectivity, improve the sustainability of telecom infrastructure, and support national efforts to achieve universal broadband access while promoting clean energy adoption.
