A mystery has emerged at a hotel on Clifford Street in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State after an unidentified woman was found dead in a room she reportedly occupied with a male companion.
The Cross River State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the incident and launched a manhunt for the unidentified man who was last seen with the deceased.
According to the police, the incident was reported at about 8am on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, by the hotel director, accompanied by the manager and receptionist on duty.
Preliminary findings indicated that the male guest checked into Room 2 of the hotel at about 8pm on Monday, September 7, with the female companion.
Police said the male guest was allegedly not properly documented during the check-in process.
The woman was reportedly discovered after a receptionist entered the room in the early hours of Tuesday, believing the occupants had already checked out. Upon switching on the light, the receptionist found the woman lying unresponsive on the bed.
Investigators who visited the scene reportedly observed marks on the woman’s face and neck, prompting further investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Her body was subsequently evacuated to the General Hospital, Calabar, where she was confirmed dead and deposited in the mortuary pending an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Police also recovered some tablets from the deceased’s handbag and secured them as exhibits. However, the command has not established any connection between the tablets and her death.
The receptionist has reportedly been taken into custody to assist investigators with information about the circumstances surrounding the woman’s stay and the hotel’s admission process.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Geoffrey Ordue, had directed a professional investigation to establish the identity of the deceased, determine the cause of death and ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The command urged members of the public to avoid speculation and provide credible information that could assist investigators in identifying the deceased and locating the missing male guest.Investigation into the incident is ongoing.
