TCN Begins Repairs After Fresh Vandalism Hits Rivers Power Line

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced rehabilitation work on four vandalised transmission towers along the Afam/IPP/Elelenwo 132kV Double-Circuit Transmission Line in Rivers State.

The affected towers, identified as T50, T51, T52 and T53, were discovered during an inspection by TCN engineers from the Port Harcourt Transmission Region on August 6, 2026.

According to the company, further inspection showed that critical members and bracing components of the towers had been removed and carted away, compromising their structural integrity and posing a risk to the reliable transmission of electricity along the corridor.

TCN said it subsequently mobilised a contractor to the site to carry out the necessary rehabilitation work.

A formal handover ceremony was held on September 8 by the Port Harcourt Transmission Region to mark the commencement of the rehabilitation exercise.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Head of Lines, Port Harcourt Transmission Region, Engr. Azuh Lucky, who represented TCN management, called for greater involvement from residents and community leaders in protecting electricity infrastructure.

He urged residents of Elelenwo, traditional rulers and the local government chairman to support efforts to prevent further vandalism and remain vigilant around transmission facilities.

TCN said the latest incident represents the fifth reported vandalism attack on the same transmission line in recent times.

The company appealed to residents and other stakeholders to cooperate with its efforts to safeguard the rehabilitated towers, stressing that community support is essential to protecting critical transmission infrastructure and maintaining reliable electricity transmission along the corridor.

TCN also assured the public that it was committed to completing the rehabilitation work as quickly as possible.
