MonITNG Questions Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Cash Giveaway at Kogi Empowerment Event

Written by Mary Bassey

Civic technology organisation MonITNG has criticised Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over the alleged public display and distribution of large sums of money during an empowerment event in Kogi State.

The organisation questioned the impact of the reported cash handouts, arguing that distributing millions of naira to beneficiaries may not necessarily translate into meaningful representation or provide a lasting solution to poverty.

The criticism comes amid growing public debate over the senator’s recent empowerment programme, which was held as part of activities marking her third year in the Senate.

Reports indicate that the senator described the financial assistance as business grants intended to help small-scale entrepreneurs start or expand their businesses. She reportedly explained that she opted for cash support after discovering that some beneficiaries of previously distributed sewing machines sold the equipment instead of using them for business.

However, the development has continued to generate mixed reactions, with some Nigerians defending the initiative as direct financial support for constituents, while others argue that sustainable projects, job creation and improved infrastructure would provide more lasting economic benefits. Very Nigerian.

MonITNG’s criticism has therefore renewed questions about what citizens should expect from elected representatives and whether occasional cash distributions are enough to address the economic challenges facing their communities.
