FG Takes Drastic Steps On Nigerians Returning from South Africa

Written by Mary Bassey

The Federal Government has commenced efforts to seek compensation for Nigerians who were forced to abandon businesses, homes and other valuable assets while returning from South Africa following renewed waves of anti-immigrant hostility.

Acting Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa, Ambassador Alexander Ajayi, disclosed that the Nigerian Mission has begun documenting the losses suffered by affected citizens, including businesses, vehicles and other movable and immovable properties left behind.

According to Ajayi, the documentation exercise is aimed at compiling credible evidence that will support Nigeria’s compensation claims during engagements with the South African authorities.

He explained that the initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s broader commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Nigerians living abroad, particularly those who have suffered financial losses as a result of xenophobic attacks and anti-immigrant violence.

The envoy urged affected Nigerians who have returned home after abandoning their investments in South Africa to cooperate with the Nigerian Mission by providing relevant documents and evidence of ownership to strengthen the compensation process.

Relations between Nigeria and South Africa have experienced periods of strain over recurring xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals, including Nigerians. Previous incidents have led to the destruction of businesses, loss of lives and emergency evacuations, prompting diplomatic engagements between both countries.

The Federal Government has repeatedly maintained that Nigerians living abroad deserve adequate protection under international law and has pledged to continue pursuing justice and compensation for victims whoselivelihoods were affected.
