A final-year student has been shot as rival cult groups clashed at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), formerly Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH).
The ugly incident happened at the Calabar Campus on Monday, November 28, 2022, when the students were writing their second-semester examinations.
According to one of the students who spoke under anonymity, the final-year student came to write his carryover exam when he was attacked by a rival cult group.
“We were in the exam hall writing our second-semester exams when a group of guys identified as cultists drove in, in a tinted car.
“Their target was a final-year student who is writing his carryover. They fished him out and shot at him several times and then jumped into the tinted vehicle they drove in with. On their way out of the campus, their vehicle fell inside a gutter, they abandon it and flee”, the anonymous student said.
It took the presence of the tactical Police unit, Anti-Kidnapping and Cultism Squad (Dragon Squad) to calm the situation.
“The gunshots erupted the exams as students were scampering for their lives. It was the Dragon Squad that came and rushed the student to the hospital, else he could have died”, the anonymous student added.
The examinations have been postponed till further notice.
Note also that, regular students do finish their exams before the final year students begin theirs.
Recall that a few days ago, the female hostel of the institution was attacked by hoodlums with students’ items being carted away. The incident led to the students barricading the campus’s Main Gate, calling on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Augustine Angba to beef up security in and outside of the campus.
