MTN CHAMPS CALABAR: Grand Finale of MTN Champs Season 2 Results

Best Okpor had an incredible performance at the MTN CHAMPS Season 2 Grand Final in Calabar, winning three individual GOLD medals on the last day of competition on Friday, May 3, 2024, at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar, Cross River State.

In the Cadet Boys\’ (U14) 400-meter heats, the Team MVP athlete who had won Long Jump GOLD on the second day of competition cut more than a second off his Personal Best (PB), winning in 56.13 seconds.

Ismail Hassan, another Team MVP athlete won Silver in 56.51 seconds, while Chinedu Progress finished third in 59.25 seconds also in the 200-meter event, winning in 25.18 seconds (-0.4).

He finished much ahead of Ismail Hassan, who earned his second medal of the day in 25.98 seconds for Bronze, and Muhammad Nura, who finished in 25.95 seconds.

Praise Ugwushita won the girls\’ 400-meter event by taking the lead early and holding on to finish first in 61.04 seconds! God\’smind Eteng completed in 61.98 seconds, but she finished ahead of him. Hephzibah Okon received a Bronze in 62.05 seconds.

Ejiro Peter, who had finished in second place in the 100 meters, had a tremendous comeback in the Cadet Girls 200 meters final. She took the lead early and maintained it to take the gold in 26.53 seconds! She finished ahead of Karo Onisuru in 27.19 seconds and Ella Udumubrai in 27.03 seconds.

In the first part of the Youth (U17) Boys\’ 400m, Benjamin Magaji got out to a fast start. However, Michael Aniche persevered and his strategy paid off as he caught up to Benjamin over the final few meters to win GOLD in 50.58 seconds. With a new Personal Best (PB) time of 51.48 seconds, Magaji was awarded a silver medal for all of his hard work, and Emmanuel Obi placed third in 51.70 seconds.

Kehinde Ojo settled for second place in 23.51 seconds, but Aniche was unrelenting in his pursuit and overtook him on the line to win his second GOLD in 23.49 seconds (-0.8). Benjamin Magaji completed the podium in 23.94 seconds.

The Achievement of Team MVP With a time of 57.33 seconds, Okoro won the Youth (U17) Girls\’ 400-meter race with complete dominance! With Believe Oghenevwegba coming in second in 58.95 seconds and Angel Eteng settling for third place in 59.73 seconds, she led a 1-2 finish.

Gafar Badmus won in 47.94 seconds, easily defeating Victor Sampson in 48.89 seconds and Edidiong Ime Udotong in 50.11 seconds.

Badmus\’ incredible 47.50-second run during the Ibadan leg had already secured the MTN CHAMPS Record for the Junior division.

Adaeze Eze won the Youth Girls 200m in 25.44 seconds (-0.5), earning her 11th GOLD medal in two school championship seasons. She struggled to overtake Chiamaka Lucy Nwankwo, who had the lead for over half of the race, and had to settle for Silver in 25.49 seconds. Third in 26.28 seconds was Dorcas Ogundipe.

Faith Osamuyi won the 200-meter junior women\’s race, clocking in 24.05 seconds (-0.5) to beat an invigorated Chigozie. Kate Odumoso finished in 25.04 seconds, and Rosemary Nwankwo recorded 24.71 seconds.

With a time of PB 23.48s (-1.7), Precious Nzeakor destroyed the Senior women\’s field, besting 100-meter champion Blessing Ogundiran in 24.86s and Janet Adesiyan in 24.90s.

In the Junior men\’s 200m, Caleb John finished ahead of Tejiri Godwin with a time of 21.91s (-0.3) compared to the latter\’s 22.19s. He had lost to Godwin in the 100 meters.

In the senior men\’s event, Olabode Toviho finished third in 22.41 seconds, behind Anyadiegwu Kenechukwu in 21.99 seconds and Hope Okoro in 21.74 seconds (-0.1).

FPS Academy won the Cadet Girls 4x100m in 52.96 seconds, defeating Government Girls School in 53.21 seconds and Team MVP, who had to settle with second place in 53.03 seconds.

In the boys\’ race, Team MVP made amends by winning by a significant margin in 50.08 seconds! Darius Odebiyi, Paul Olaoluwa, David Ekunwe, and Best Okopor were victorious, clocking 52.44 seconds to overcome Baptist Vocational\’s second-place finish, while Police Secondary School finished third in 58.65 seconds.

Additionally, they won the Youth category, when their girls ran 51.08 seconds, defeating Abua Government\’s 52.03 seconds. With the help of their standout athlete Michael Aniche, Baptist Vocational claimed Silver in 46.07 seconds, narrowly missing out on the Boys in 45.70s.

In the junior women\’s (U20) 4×100-meter relay, Akwa Ibom defeated Team MVP A to win the gold. In the men\’s event, MVP B team defeated Team MVP A in 42.08 seconds as opposed to the latter\’s 42.57 seconds.

Arena Academy won the Senior Women\’s 4x100m relay with a time of 46.66s, about ten seconds faster than Nigerian Customs, who finished in second place with 55.25s.

In the men\’s race, D\’Victors won in 41.60 seconds, better than Golden Eagle\’s 42.54 seconds and Akwa Ibom\’s 42.08 seconds.

Wesley Comprehensive won the Mixed 4x400m in 3:31.18, five seconds faster than Team MVP A\’s time of 3:36.57 and the B team\’s time of 3:40.95, signaling the end of the Season 2 Grand Final.
