The Federal Government has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand Nigeria’s installed electricity generation capacity to 277 gigawatts (GW) by 2060, as part of broader reforms aimed at modernising the country’s power sector, attracting investment, and supporting industrial growth.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed the plan while addressing stakeholders, stating that ongoing reforms in the electricity sector have already attracted more than $2 billion in investments.
According to the minister, the government’s long-term strategy is focused on building a reliable, sustainable, and diversified electricity supply through increased investment in renewable energy, transmission infrastructure, and private sector participation.
Tegbe said the reforms are designed to improve electricity access, strengthen grid reliability, and create a more competitive business environment for industries across the country.
He also assured manufacturers that dependence on diesel-powered generators as their primary source of electricity would gradually come to an end as power supply improves.
“The era when industries rely heavily on diesel generators for their operations will soon be behind us,” the minister said, expressing confidence that ongoing investments and policy reforms would significantly reduce energy costs and improve productivity.
The minister noted that expanding electricity generation and integrating cleaner energy sources would not only enhance energy security but also support Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda and commitments to reducing carbon emissions.
The Federal Government has continued to implement reforms following the enactment of the Electricity Act, which opened the sector to greater state and private sector participation, with the aim of accelerating investment and improving power delivery nationwide.
Industry stakeholders believe that achieving the 277GW target will require sustained investment, effective policy implementation, and significant expansion of transmission and distribution infrastructure over the coming decades.
