The African Action Congress (AAC) has alleged that the Federal Government’s continued legal actions against its presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, are politically motivated and aimed at silencing one of the administration’s most outspoken critics.
Speaking during an interview on News Central TV, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Rex Elanu, claimed that growing public support for Sowore is behind what he described as the government’s sustained persecution of the activist.
Elanu argued that many Nigerians now see Sowore as a symbol of opposition because of his consistent criticism of the government and his outspoken stance on issues affecting the country.
According to him, Sowore has remained one of the few political figures who continues to speak openly about Nigeria’s economic challenges, insecurity, governance issues, and the rising cost of living.
The AAC spokesman further alleged that the prosecution of Sowore over comments he reportedly made about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is intended to intimidate dissenting voices and discourage criticism of the current administration.
He maintained that the charges against the former presidential candidate are politically driven rather than based on genuine legal concerns, insisting that the party would continue to support Sowore throughout the legal process.
The Federal Government has not accepted the AAC’s allegations and has maintained that legal proceedings against individuals are conducted in accordance with the law. The matter remains before the court.
