Players to Use ‘X’ Gesture to Report Racist Abuse at World Cup
In a significant move to strengthen the fight against racism in football, players at the World Cup can now use an official “X” gesture to report incidents of racist abuse directly to referees during matches.
The newly introduced protocol is designed to provide a clear and immediate way for players to alert match officials when they experience or witness discriminatory behavior from spectators, opponents, or other individuals involved in the game.
Under the procedure, when a player signals the “X” gesture, referees will be required to assess the situation and activate a three-step anti-racism protocol. Depending on the severity and persistence of the abuse, match officials may first pause the game to address the incident and issue warnings.
If the racist behavior continues, the referee has the authority to suspend the match for up to 15 minutes, allowing security personnel and tournament organizers to intervene and restore order. Should the abuse persist despite these measures, the referee may take the unprecedented step of abandoning the match altogether.
Football governing bodies have described the initiative as part of a broader commitment to creating a safer and more inclusive environment for players, officials, and supporters worldwide. The protocol aims to send a strong message that racism has no place in football and that discriminatory conduct will be met with immediate consequences.
The introduction of the “X” gesture also provides players with a universally recognized signal that can be understood across languages and cultures, ensuring that reports of abuse are communicated quickly and effectively during high-pressure match situations.
As football continues its efforts to combat discrimination, the new reporting mechanism represents another important step toward protecting players and preserving the integrity of the sport on the world’s biggest stage.
