Reasons Nigeria Joins Global Initiative to Strengthen Undersea Internet Cables

Written by Mary Bassey

Nigeria has joined a global initiative to improve the protection and resilience of submarine telecommunications cables, the undersea infrastructure responsible for carrying more than 99 per cent of the world’s international internet and data traffic.

The move follows the adoption of the final report of the International Advisory Body on Submarine Cable Resilience, which sets out key recommendations to strengthen the reliability of global cable networks.

The report highlights several major challenges facing submarine cable systems, including accidental and deliberate physical damage, lengthy repair timelines, limited alternative cable routes, and growing dependence on a small number of international cable networks.

By supporting the initiative, Nigeria joins other countries in promoting stronger international cooperation, improved cable maintenance, faster repair mechanisms, and increased investment in resilient digital infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted internet connectivity and secure global communications.

Submarine cables form the backbone of the global digital economy, enabling international internet access, financial transactions, cloud computing, and cross-border communications. Experts say strengthening their resilience is vital as demand for digital services continues to grow worldwide.

The global recommendations are also expected to encourage governments, regulators, and private sector stakeholders to work together in safeguarding critical digital infrastructure against disruptions caused by natural disasters, accidents, and other emerging threats.
