The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has announced that the institution will not admit new students into the Department of Medical Laboratory Science for the 2026 academic session.
The announcement was made during a town hall meeting held on Thursday, where the Vice-Chancellor explained that the decision was necessitated by the excessive backlog of students currently in the department.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the temporary suspension of admissions is aimed at addressing the existing challenges, reducing the student backlog, and ensuring that enrolled students receive quality training in line with accreditation and academic standards.
The university management assured stakeholders that efforts are being intensified to resolve the issues affecting the department and improve the learning environment for current students.
Further details regarding the duration of the admission suspension and plans for future admissions are expected to be communicated by the university authorities in due course.
