The First Lady of Cross River State, Rev. Mrs Eyoanwan Bassey Otu has joined forces with the Ministry of Health and several implementing partners to kick off the World AIDS Day Walk. The event, organized to raise awareness and promote support for those living with HIV/AIDS, attracted a massive turnout of participants from different walks of life.

Standing in double capacity as Representative of the Governor, Prince Bassey Otu, and the First Lady of Cross River State, Rev. Otu reiterated the government’s commitment to combatting HIV/AIDS. This year’s theme, “Communities Leadership; to end AIDS by 2030,” resonates profoundly with the shared responsibility we bear. Our communities are the bedrock of strength, resilience, and progress. It is within our neighbourhoods, schools, workplaces, and homes that we can forge impactful change in the fight against AIDS.”
“As the wife of the Governor of Cross River State, I am committed to leveraging our resources and influence to intensify the fight against AIDS. I urge you to join hands with us, standing shoulder to shoulder, as we strive to create an AIDS-free generation for our beloved state.”

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Ayuk, addressing the gathering, emphasized the importance of solidarity and collective action in fighting HIV/AIDS. ”There is a need for increased support, especially for vulnerable populations, in order to achieve UNAIDS’ goal of eradicating AIDS by 2030. Hust like the theme says, “Communities; leadership to end AIDS by 2030, all hands must be on deck to ensure HIV is eradicated from the Cross River Community.”
Joining hands with the First Lady were various implementing partners, including leading healthcare organizations, non-governmental organizations, and community-based groups. Their presence and collaboration highlighted the strength of partnerships in driving effective strategies for combating HIV/AIDS and ensuring access to adequate healthcare for all.
The HIV/AIDS walk heralds the kick-off for the 32 days of non-stop activities to mark the 2023 Carnival, themed, Season of Sweetness. “
