Ten final-year students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Calabar (UNICAL) have been awarded the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Student Hardship Grant for the 2025/2026 academic session.
Each of the 10 beneficiaries will receive £400, bringing the total value of the support to £4,000.
IMechE Grant to Support Students Facing Financial Challenges
The grant is designed to provide financial assistance to mechanical engineering students experiencing hardship and help them meet some of the costs associated with completing their studies.
The support is particularly significant for final-year students, who typically face additional academic and project-related demands as they complete their degree programmes.
According to the IMechE, its Student Hardship Grant programme supports mechanical engineering students who are IMechE members and experiencing financial need during their studies. The grants can be used to assist with eligible living and study-related costs, although the programme does not cover tuition fees.
£4,000 Support for UNICAL Beneficiaries
With 10 students receiving £400 each, the UNICAL beneficiaries will collectively receive £4,000 under the 2025/2026 intervention.
The grant is expected to ease some of the financial pressures facing the students and enable them to remain focused on their academic work as they approach the completion of their Mechanical Engineering degrees.
The IMechE has also highlighted its commitment to supporting students and developing the next generation of mechanical engineers through financial assistance, scholarships, professional development opportunities and university engagement.
IMechE Expands International Student Support
The development comes amid IMechE’s broader international student support programme. The institution’s current guidance states that, because of high demand, applications from students studying in Nigeria, Pakistan and Malaysia are being handled through selected universities rather than through the standard direct-application route.
This makes the support particularly relevant to students in Nigeria who are experiencing financial difficulties while pursuing Mechanical Engineering.
For the 10 UNICAL beneficiaries, the £400 award represents more than financial assistance. It provides additional support at a critical stage of their academic journey and reinforces the importance of professional engineering organisations in helping students overcome barriers to completing their education.
The intervention is also expected to encourage more students to engage with professional engineering bodies and explore opportunities for professional development as they transition from university into the engineering profession.
