A fresh controversy has emerged over Nigeria’s security situation after United States Senator Ted Cruz criticised the Federal Government’s engagement of a lobbying firm to address concerns about the killing of Christians in the country.
Speaking during discussions on religious freedom and security in Nigeria, the Texas Republican senator argued that rather than relying on public relations efforts in Washington, the Nigerian government should prioritise tackling the violence affecting many communities.
Cruz expressed disappointment over reports that the administration of President Bola Tinubu hired a lobbying firm to communicate its efforts to the US government. According to him, such an approach appears aimed at shaping international perception instead of addressing the underlying insecurity.
The senator maintained that the continued attacks on Christian communities remain a serious issue that deserves concrete action, urging the Nigerian government to strengthen measures to protect lives and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
Meanwhile, former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, also criticised the Presidency over claims surrounding a reported letter from United States President Donald Trump.
Frank alleged that the Presidency was misleading Nigerians by portraying the reported correspondence as an endorsement of President Tinubu’s administration. He argued that the contents of the letter, as reported, did not amount to political support for the Nigerian government.
The Presidency has consistently maintained that the Tinubu administration is committed to addressing insecurity through ongoing military operations, intelligence gathering, and other security initiatives across the country.
The latest remarks by Senator Cruz are expected to fuel renewed debate over Nigeria’s security challenges and its diplomatic engagement with the United States, particularly on issues relating to religious freedom and the protection of vulnerable communities.
