Why James Bond Should Stay a White Male, Former Casting Director Says

Written by Mary Bassey

Former James Bond casting director Debbie McWilliams has said she believes the iconic British spy should continue to be portrayed as a white male, insisting the character should remain true to author Ian Fleming’s original vision.

McWilliams, who worked as the casting director for 14 James Bond films over a career spanning more than four decades, made the remarks during an onstage interview at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic.

According to GB News, she argued that Bond was created as a white British male and that changing the character’s core identity would move away from Fleming’s original concept.

Her comments come as discussions continue over the future of the James Bond franchise following the departure of actor Daniel Craig after No Time to Die (2021). Fans and industry observers have continued to speculate about who will take on the role next, with debates over whether the next 007 should reflect greater diversity.

McWilliams maintained that while diversity in film is important, she believes new and original characters should be created to represent different backgrounds rather than altering established fictional figures like James Bond.

The future of the franchise remains uncertain, with no official announcement yet on who will play the next James Bond. Recent reports indicate that producers are still developing the next chapter of the long-running spy series.
