MTN Nigeria Revolutionizes Telecoms with Eco-Friendly SIM Cards.
MTN Nigeria has taken a groundbreaking step towards reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainability by introducing paper-based, bio-degradable SIM cards.
This innovative move makes MTN the first telecoms company in Nigeria to adopt eco-friendly SIM cards.
Aligning with its corporate policy to drive Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) sustainability goals.
Announcing the launch of the bio-degradable SIM cards, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer (CCSSO) at MTN Nigeria, Tobe Okigbo said MTN would begin phase replacement of its existing plastic SIM cards.
But would commence the immediate rollout of the new bio-degradable SIM cards for all SIM replacement, upgrade and swap.
This is to support sustainability of the environment.
The Need for Sustainable Biodegradable SIM Cards.
Traditional plastic SIM cards contribute significantly to plastic waste, with over six billion produced globally each year.
In Nigeria alone, it’s estimated that by 2025, over 200 million subscribers will be using plastic SIM cards, exacerbating the existing plastic waste issue.
MTN’s introduction of bio-degradable SIM cards is a crucial step towards mitigating this problem.
MTN’s Commitment to Sustainability.
Tobe Okigbo, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Nigeria, emphasized the company’s dedication to environmental responsibility and reducing waste.
He said
“Our new eco-friendly SIM cards represent part of our continuous commitment to environmental responsibility.”
MTN has partnered with Secure ID to design and produce bio-degradable SIMs for the Nigerian telecoms market.
