Nursing Department Prioritizes Capacity Development for Excellence

The Special Assistant to the Governor on Nursing, Mr. Coco-Bassey Esu, recently convened a meeting with the Nursing Department of the State Ministry of Health, emphasizing the importance of human capacity development in the nursing profession. This initiative aims to equip nurses with the necessary skills and knowledge to address global healthcare challenges. Under the leadership of Governor Senator Prince Bassey Otu, the state is committed to improving healthcare services.

Mr. Esu stressed that the Nursing Department plays a vital role in overseeing nursing practice, training, and retraining, and serves as the “eye” of the nursing profession in the state. He highlighted the need to activate dormant units within the department and to identify best practices globally, nationally, and at the state level to enhance the profession.

The Special Assistant announced plans for in-service training and retraining programs for nurses, particularly in specialties that are currently lacking. This initiative is in line with the Governor’s passion for improving healthcare services, especially in the nursing profession. Mr. Esu called for capacity building to enhance the skills and knowledge of nurses.

The Director of Nursing Services, Cross River State, Nurse Agnes Ita Bassey, expressed the department’s readiness to collaborate with the Special Assistant to elevate the nursing profession and improve patient care and nursing training. The meeting was attended by various departmental unit directors, who shared their success stories and challenges with Mr. Esu. The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Ajuk, is expected to provide oversight and support for these initiatives.

The unit directors who attended the meeting included: Mrs. Mary Amah, Director, SASCAP, Mrs. Felicia Ayim, Director, Gender-Based Violence, Mrs. Ebe Ita, In-charge Staff Clinic, Mrs. Serah Unaji, representing the Director, SERVICOM, Mrs. Nkoyo Nsefik, Climate Change Unit among other Nurses in the Department.

These directors presented their achievements and challenges to the Special Assistant, who promised to bring them to the attention of Dr. Henry Ajuk, the Honorable Commissioner for Health, for intervention.

The meeting marked an important step towards strengthening the nursing profession in the state. With the Special Assistant’s commitment to capacity building and the department’s readiness to collaborate, the stage is set for significant improvements in nursing practice, training, and patient care.
