United States President Donald Trump has threatened to impose fresh tariffs on the European Union and launch a formal trade investigation following the bloc’s latest antitrust action against tech giant Google.
In a post shared on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump accused the European Union of unfairly targeting American companies through what he described as excessive regulatory penalties.
He warned that the EU would “pay a very big price” for what he called its “illegal and highly unethical conduct,” insisting that he had repeatedly cautioned European leaders against actions he believes discriminate against US businesses.
Trump also announced plans to immediately initiate a Section 301 investigation, a trade mechanism under US law that allows the government to investigate foreign practices considered unfair or harmful to American commerce. Such investigations can pave the way for retaliatory measures, including tariffs.
According to Trump, the investigation would examine what he described as the European Union’s practice of “robbing” American companies through regulatory actions and financial penalties.
He added that he expects a “substantial tariff” to be imposed on the EU “at the earliest possible moment” if the investigation finds evidence of unfair trade practices.
The latest dispute further heightens tensions between Washington and Brussels over the regulation of major US technology companies, including Google, Apple, Meta and Amazon. European regulators have in recent years imposed several multibillion-dollar fines and introduced stricter digital market rules aimed at curbing the dominance of large technology firms.
Trump’s remarks signal the possibility of renewed trade friction between the United States and the European Union, with both sides likely to closely monitor developments in the coming weeks.
