Costa Rican authorities have arrested the country’s most wanted suspected drug trafficker, Alejandro Arias Monge, widely known by the alias “El Diablo,” following a major security operation that turned deadly.
The arrest took place on Friday in Rio Frio, Heredia Province, after law enforcement officers launched a coordinated raid targeting a gathering of suspected leaders of criminal organizations. The operation was carried out by Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) with support from other security agencies.
According to Costa Rica’s Attorney General, Carlos Diaz, Arias Monge was taken into custody without escaping, marking a significant breakthrough in the country’s fight against organized crime.
The United States had previously announced a $500,000 reward for information leading to Arias Monge’s arrest, accusing him of involvement in international drug trafficking and links to transnational criminal networks.
Authorities said the operation also resulted in the death of another suspected criminal leader, identified as Roney Rios. In addition, eight people sustained injuries during the raid, although officials have not disclosed the severity of their conditions.
Costa Rican investigators believe Arias Monge led one of the country’s most powerful drug trafficking groups, allegedly responsible for transporting cocaine through Central America to international markets.
Officials described the arrest as a major victory against organized crime and said investigations are continuing to identify and apprehend other members of the criminal network.
