Three people have been confirmed dead while about 20 others sustained injuries following a road crash on the Ife-Ilesa Expressway in Osun State on Saturday.
The accident occurred in the Tonkere area of the highway when two vehicles reportedly collided head-on.
Confirming the incident, the Osun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Sunday Adebayo, said the crash was caused by speeding and dangerous driving.
Adebayo disclosed this during a telephone interview with The PUNCH, adding that FRSC personnel arrived at the scene about five minutes after the crash was reported.
According to him, the impact of the collision left three people dead and about 20 others injured.
The injured victims were attended to following the crash, while the circumstances surrounding the collision were being assessed by the relevant authorities.
The FRSC has continued to caution motorists against excessive speeding, reckless driving and other dangerous road practices, particularly on major highways.
The Ife-Ilesa corridor is an important route in Osun State and has been undergoing reconstruction as part of the wider Ibadan-Ife-Ilesa Expressway project. Recent reports indicate that work on the road resumed in July after the contractor addressed concerns raised by the Minister of Works, David Umahi.
Motorists using the route are advised to exercise caution, obey speed limits and avoid dangerous manoeuvres.
