NSCDC Warns Miners as Enforcement Intensifies

Written by Mary Bassey

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has issued a fresh warning to mining operators across the country, stressing that ignorance of mining laws will not protect anyone from prosecution.

The warning was contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by the Commander of the Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant of Corps John Attah.

Attah urged mining operators to comply with existing laws and regulations governing the exploration and exploitation of Nigeria’s mineral resources, warning that those found engaging in illegal mining activities would face the full weight of the law.

The warning comes amid renewed enforcement operations by the NSCDC Mining Marshals across the country as part of efforts to sanitise the solid minerals sector and tackle illegal mining.

The Corps has continued to position its Mining Marshals as a key part of efforts to combat illegal mining, which the NSCDC says poses risks to Nigeria’s environment, economy and national security.

The NSCDC said its enforcement activities are aimed at ensuring compliance, dismantling unlawful mining operations and protecting legitimate investments in the sector.

The Corps also has statutory powers to arrest, investigate and institute legal proceedings in the discharge of its lawful duties.

The latest warning therefore serves as a reminder to mining operators that obtaining the necessary approvals and complying with relevant regulations are essential to operating legally in Nigeria’s mining sector.

The NSCDC urged operators to familiarise themselves with applicable mining regulations and avoid activities that could expose them to arrest and prosecution.
