The Nigeria Customs Service, Port Harcourt Area II Command, Onne, Rivers State, has intercepted 56 containers containing prohibited goods with a combined duty-paid value of N5.53 billion.
The seized consignments reportedly included vegetable oil, tomatoes and used clothing, which were allegedly imported into the country through the Onne Free Trade Zone under false declarations.
According to the Customs Service, the importers declared the containers as carrying machinery and spare parts, but physical inspections revealed the presence of goods classified as contraband.
The development highlights the ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Customs Service to curb smuggling, prevent the illegal importation of restricted products and protect government revenue.
The command’s seizure of the containers is also expected to raise concerns about the use of false cargo declarations to evade customs duties and import regulations.
The seized goods remain subject to the relevant Customs procedures, including investigations and possible legal action against those found responsible for the alleged offences.
The Nigeria Customs Service has continued to warn importers and clearing agents to comply with import regulations and make accurate declarations to avoid sanctions.
