Celebrating the International Youth Day 2024
In continuation of his advocacy on topical issues, the Federal Lawmaker, representing Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency, Rep. Bassey Akiba, has asserted that the strength of any nation lies in her youth population, adding that as developing individuals, youth possess the potential, creativity, and capacity to bring change to society through their modern and innovative way of thinking.
He made the assertion in commemoration i of the 2024 International Youth Day with the theme; \”From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development\”.
\”Young people are leading the adoption and development of new technologies, driving digital trends and innovation globally. Digitalization is transforming our world, offering opportunities to accelerate sustainable development. Digital technologies such as mobile devices, services, and artificial intelligence are instrumental in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)\”.
Rep. Bassey Akiba posited that youth, as digital generations and visionaries, are at the forefront of adopting new technologies, and form the largest demographic of users and developers that shape digital trends globally, which makes them the driving force behind digitalization and innovation, and an essential demographic group in leveraging the transformative power of technologies to address global challenges.
The Federal Lawmaker said the Nigerian youth, especially in recent happenings, have continued to stir up within themselves yearning for wide scale development and amplified their voices through self-motivated endeavours as well as role models-influenced achievements, therein carved a niche for themselves.
He emphasized the importance of investing in and empowering the youth, noting that his representation places high premium on youth development and has programmes to train and empower young people through Agric-Based Cooperatives, thereby making them self-reliant with sustainable livelihoods.
In the words of Rep. Bassey Akiba: \”The strength of any nation lies in her youth population and the strategic thing to do is to equip this teeming population with the tools and techniques to be productive. Let us all get the youth seriously involved in the task of nation building and socio-economic development, because when you build the youth, you are building the nation\”.
International Youth Day is celebrated every year on August 12, to acknowledge and celebrate the pivotal role of youth as well as bring the world\’s attention to several issues associated with the young people.
