Caribbean Diasporans Arrived in Calabar- Gov. Otu Speech at their arrival

The Governor of Cross River State, Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, has received the first batch of Caribbean diasporans who arrived in Calabar for the Nigeria Homecoming Convention, which is organised by the Cross River State Government in conjunction with GUCCAD Nigeria and the Cross River State Diaspora Commission (CRIDCOM).

The delegation arrived at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport, where they were warmly welcomed by the Governor, accompanied by the Chairman of CRIDCOM, Prince Otu Okor, and other government officials.

At the reception, Gov. Otu described their arrival as a proud and historic moment for the State, symbolising the deep-rooted bond between Cross River and its extended family across the Caribbean. He expressed his delight that descendants of the State were reconnecting with their ancestral home, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening relations with the global African diaspora.

“This homecoming is a testament to our shared history and enduring unity as one people,” Governor Otu stated. “As a government, we are determined to build stronger partnerships with the diaspora community, harnessing their talents, resources, and goodwill for the sustainable growth and development of Cross River State.”

In his remark, Prince Otu Okor expressed delight at the successful arrival of the delegation and commended the Governor for his presence and continued support, noting that CRIDCOM had worked closely with the State Government and partners to ensure the visitors enjoy a memorable stay in Calabar.

He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to strengthening diaspora engagement and fostering closer ties between Cross Riverians at home and abroad, stressing that the Commission continues to serve as a bridge connecting the State to its citizens and descendants across the world.

Also speaking, the Vice President of GUCCAD and other members of the visiting delegation expressed their joy and fulfilment to be in Calabar, with some describing the visit as an emotional return to their ancestral homeland. They commended the warm hospitality extended to them and said they look forward to a week-long celebration of culture, heritage, and partnership, an opportunity not only to reconnect with their roots but also to explore avenues of giving back and investing meaningfully in the land of their origin.

The Nigeria Homecoming Convention continues in Calabar, marking a new chapter in Cross River’s engagement with the global diaspora and reaffirming the State’s position as a hub for cultural reconnection, shared heritage, and sustainable partnership.
